Test Scoring

OMET provides scoring and analysis of multiple-choice examinations given in University courses. The answer sheets and scoring service are available without cost to University faculty and teaching assistants. Answer sheets are processed through the use of an optical and imaging scanner and test results are returned the next day. Summary statistics and item analysis data are generated, and professional staff members are available to assist with interpretation. Faculty, staff, and students involved in survey research can also utilize the answer sheets and optical/imaging scanning services.

The Fortran program on VMS that has been used in the past to score tests and produce item analysis reports will not be available after December. In its place we have purchased a PC-based software called ParSCORE from Scantron. We will continue to scan tests and questionnaires and produce high quality reports. We will also offer assistance in using ParSCORE. ParSCORE has some new features such as the ability to give credit for items with either/or answers or two answers. So starting in the fall when picking up computer sheets you will automatically be given ParSCORE sheets. Remember after December, the only sheets that can be used are ParSCORE sheets.

Best Practices

Each student's answer sheet has to have the ID Number filled in. The numbers for a class have to all be the same length up to 10-digits. The ParSCORE system identifies students by a numerical ID rather than name. Each student in your class will need to be associated with a unique 2-10 digit number. Students should retain the same ID number for the entire semester. We suggest one of the following two options:

  • Students use their seven-digit PeopleSoft number, which they can access through my.pitt.edu.
  • The instructor assigns a two or three digit number to each student and keeps a record of the numbers.

It is also suggested to have the students code in their names so you will have a record of student names on your reports.

Using our Services

Each scanning job is required to have a Request for Scanning Service form submitted along with the Scantron sheets. Request Scanning Service forms are available in the OMET office or can be downloaded from OMET’s web site. At the time of drop off, a blue card with a job number will be given. This card must be returned in order to pick up the job. Otherwise, the name of the person picking up the results has to be on the form as the contact person. He or she must show Pitt ID.

For after hours delivery, a drop off slot is located in the door of G33. A card will not be issued but the name of the person picking up the forms has to be on the request form and show Pitt ID.
